Chinese Medicine Treatments for Children
Shonishin, Shiatsu and Herbal Medicine
Chinese Medicine for Children
Chinese medicine provides excellent, gentle and natural health care options for all children - from newborns to teenagers
All treatments are completely safe and generally pain-free and ensure that children feel safe and respected at all times. Utmost care is taken so that treatments are relaxing and fun for both child and caregiver.
Chinese Medicine for babies & children
Babies and young children usually respond quickly and positively to Chinese medicine treatments, both to bodywork and herbal medicine. The Chinese approach recognises that the constitution of babies and small children is extremely sensitive and requires a gentler model of treatment. I always begin treatments, therefore, using the least invasive methods of massage, shonishin and ear seeds before moving to herbal baths and if necessary internally consumed herbs.
Acupressure points and massage techniques are taught to parents so that they can support their child between treatments
Conditions Treated Include:
Chinese Medicine for older children & teens
Working with older children and teens I often use Acupuncture and auricular Acupuncture as well as Shiatsu and Shonisin. Together we can begin to choose what works best for them and what they feel most comfortable receiving. Fewer needles are used and are often retained for a shorter time. For certain conditions, such as asthma, eczema and allergies I find herbal medicine to be the most effective treatment option

Range of treatments offered
Together we can match the best treatment options to your child and their condition. This could range from acupuncture or massage to herbal medicine or more simply to lifestyle and dietary advice. I will always begin with the least invasive yet effective methods of treatment.
Shonishin for babies and children
Shōnishin (from Japanese shōni = little child, shin = needling) is a non-invasive method of acupuncture which was developed in Japan for pediatric treatment around 100 years ago. Instead of using needles, different rounded tools and instruments are used to rub and tap along the channels and acupuncture points
What to expect at your first appointment
Your initial appointment will take around 1 hour and will involve an in depth chat with you and your child about their current health and health history. This may include some hands on examinations; looking at their tongue; palpating their back and tummy; and if necessary observing the body for any skin conditions.
When making your first appointment, an intake form will be emailed to you. It is very helpful to fill this form in for or with your child, before your appointment. Giving this background information will reduce your child’s time in the clinic and ensure any herbal preparations are better tailored. I have some toys in the clinic for younger children if we need to talk for a while
We can then decide together what treatment options would work best for your child and their condition
Most children will be offered either Shonishin or Shiatsu massage at their first appointment
If appropriate Acupuncture with needles can also be offered.
Diet and Lifestyle advice are taught to parents during the first session as well as Acupressure points and massage techniques so you can support your child between treatments
Herbal medicine, when needed, will be ordered online and sent directly to your home with instructions for use before our follow-up appointment
Follow-up appointments will last around 30 minutes and can be conducted in person when Acupuncture or Massage is necessary or online if only herbal medicine is required
